West Hollywood Root Canal
Root canals are a common form of dental surgery used to treat teeth that have become infected down into their inner pulp. The inner pulp of a tooth is the soft tissue at the center of your teeth that contains the blood vessels and nervous tissue. When decay and infection spread into the inner pulp, it can cause a great deal of pain and difficulty chewing.
In some cases, the infection can spread to the surrounding bone and tissue, which can lead to more serious health problems. A root canal is performed by removing the decay from the inner pulp before resealing the tooth. If treated properly, this will help save the tooth from further damage.
Root Canals vs. Dental Fillings
A common misconception is that root canals and dental fillings are the same thing. There are, however, some key differences between the two procedures. Dental fillings are used to treat simple cavities, which are small holes in the surface of the teeth that are caused by decay.
A root canal is used to treat an infection of the inner pulp and are a more intensive treatment performed to clear away the infection from the interior of the tooth.
What to Expect During a Root Canal?
During a root canal, our team of dental professionals will numb the area around the tooth to ensure your comfort. Next, we will create a small opening into the tooth in order to access the pulp. The infected inner pulp will then be cleared away and the area surrounding the tooth will be cleaned and then resealed.
In some cases, a dental crown may also be placed over the tooth to help protect it from further damage. From start to finish, the procedure can take between one or two visits but, in most cases, it can be completed in a single day.
Aftercare for a Root Canal
Immediately following a root canal, you may feel some pain and swelling for the remainder of the day. You can manage the pain with an over-the-counter medication. With proper care, your treated tooth will be strong and healthy for years to come.
