The La Brea Tar Pits and Museum is an active paleontological research site located at 5801 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036. The pits were formed around a cluster of pits, and the natural asphalt deposited there has been seeping up from the ground for tens of thousands of years. Throughout those centuries, the tar has preserved the bones of the animals trapped there.
Although mammal fossils are the most prominent finds at the museum, visitors can also find insects, plants, and pollen grains. Together, these fossils paint a picture of the glacial climate in the Los Angeles basin. The onsite museum was designed to showcase these finds. It is open daily, except on Sundays.
The site contains millions of fossils, including those of 3.5 million years ago. The museum also displays the largest collection of Ice Age fossils in the world. The museum is open to the public, and admission is free. Visitors should be aware that there are no restrooms inside the museum. A great post
There is also a Fossil Lab where visitors can watch scientists working on fossils. The museum also has a small gift shop with mostly children’s and reference books. There is no cafeteria inside the museum, but there are several food trucks in the area during lunchtime. Additional info
