Dysport

Dysport is an injectable that is used to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. It works by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscles, resulting in a decrease in muscle activity.

Botox

Botox is most commonly used in dentistry to treat TMJ and Bruxism. TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder) is a condition that causes pain and inflammation in the jaw joint and muscles. Bruxism is a similar condition that causes people to grind and clench their teeth. Both of these conditions can be extremely painful and lead to other oral health problems if left untreated.

Additionally, Botox can be used to treat “gummy smiles” and to reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the mouth. If you suffer from a high lip line, this can make your smile appear overly dominated by your gums, creating what’s known as a “gummy smile”. Botox can freeze the muscles that contract your lip, preventing them from pulling above your gumline.

How Does Botox Work?

The active ingredient in Botox is called botulinum toxin. This neurotoxin blocks nerve signals and prevents muscles from contracting. This is what makes it so effective in treating conditions like TMJ and Bruxism. When injected into the gum line and jaw, Botox will relax the muscles and reduce the grinding and clenching that causes discomfort.

What to Expect During a Botox Injection

If you decide to move forward with treatment, the next step is to schedule your appointment. The actual injection process is quick and relatively painless. You will likely feel a small pinch and the entire procedure only takes a few minutes.

After your injection, you may feel some tenderness in the injection site. This is normal and should subside within a few days. It’s also common to experience some bruising and swelling but this should also go away within a few days.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Botox is a well-researched, safe, and effective treatment with very few side effects. The most common side effect is temporary bruising or swelling at the injection site. This usually subsides within a few days but, in very rare cases, patients may experience a temporary drooping of the lip or eyebrow.
