What Qualifies as a Dental Emergency?

If uncertain if your current condition qualifies as a dental emergency, understand that your health should come before all else. Some of the most common dental emergencies we see include:

  • Teeth chipped or cracked – A chip may not seem like a big deal, but if left untreated, it could lead to a crack. Cracks are much more serious and can cause extensive damage, pain, and infection.
  • Knocked-out teeth – If you have a tooth that has been completely knocked out (avulsed), time is of the essence. The goal is to try and save the tooth.
  • Abscessed teeth – An abscess is a serious infection that can damage the tissue in your mouth, jaw, and even your neck. It’s important to seek treatment right away as an abscess can be life-threatening.
  • Intense and radiating toothaches – A toothache that won’t go away or gets worse could be a sign of an infection. If the pain is radiating to your jaw, head, or neck, it could be serious.
  • Swelling in your face or mouth – This could be a sign of infection, which if left untreated, could lead to sepsis. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, call our office right away. We will do our best to see you as soon as possible.
  • Broken tooth – A broken tooth isn’t always a dental emergency, but it can become one if the break is severe or if the tooth is infected. If you’re unsure whether or not your condition is an emergency, give us a call. We would be happy to advise you on the best course of action.
  • Broken Filling – A broken filling isn’t usually a dental emergency, but it can be if the tooth is in pain or if the break is severe. If you’re unsure whether or not your condition is an emergency, give us a call. We would be happy to advise you on the best course of action.
  • Emergency root canal – A root canal is a treatment used to save a tooth that is infected or damaged. It’s usually not an emergency, but it can be if the infection is severe. If you’re unsure whether or not your condition is an emergency, give us a call. We would be happy to advise you on the best course of action.

If at any time you are in pain or think you may have a damaged tooth, it is always best to err on the side of caution and contact us right away.

What to Expect When You Come in for Emergency Dental Care

When you come in for emergency dental care, the first thing we will do is assess the situation and determine the best course of action. If you have a tooth that has been knocked out, we will try to replant the tooth. If it cannot be replanted, we will take impressions of your teeth and create a custom dental prosthetic.

If you have a chipped, cracked, or broken tooth, we will take X-rays to determine the extent of the damage and then decide whether the tooth can be repaired or if it needs to be extracted. If you have an abscessed tooth, we will clean the area and then prescribe a course of antibiotics depending on the severity of the case.

No matter what the emergency, we are here to help. Call today to learn more about our emergency dental services.
